Child support may be used as qualifying income when it is documented, has a consistent receipt history, and is expected to continue. Because support often ends at a defined age or event, lenders look closely at how much continuance remains.
Continuance is the pivot point
With alimony, the term is usually written into the agreement. With child support, the practical term is often tied to a child's age or emancipation. If the remaining continuance is short, a lender may not be able to count it — or may count only part of it.
Where multiple children are involved, the support amount may also step down over time, which affects the picture.
What to gather
Preparing these items early usually shortens the process considerably:
- The executed agreement or court order
- Proof of payments actually received (bank deposits, state disbursement records)
- Documentation of the children's ages and the support end dates
